This project came into my thoughts a few months back but it was not until I saw these washers and the fabrics together that I knew exactly what I was going to do.
This country has had a lot of problems since it's inception. Huge things that were almost irreparable but with the strength that is America we have held ourselves together.
The American backbone is steel and strength. But lately things happening in our country have made me think of the Cold War Era, things that happened in countries we could only read about in the news, people that lived behind an iron curtain of oppression and socialism.
Each of the washers was hand stitched onto the background. The edges were purposely left exposed and frayed.
Thus this project has large cracks that have been repaired. There is a thin but heavy veil of steel covering our country.
The stitching was covered with blue checked fabric and originally I had planned to have it hang with a dowel rod but the washers made it too heavy. I put in some grommets that were the same color metal as the washers and it worked so much better.
The American flag still stands strong and proud. We have proven as Americans that we will sacrifice for our freedoms for freedom. We are of the people, by the people and for the people...together we will continue.
